Welcome
to Hotel Sinai, a local institution that is part of the
history of the city of Nagua. Mrs. Silvia Aponte opened the
hotel in 1942, four years after the municipality of Nagua was
incorporated, under the name of Hotel
San Rafael. It was a two level Victorian wooden structure of
some 110 square meters. Throughout its evolution and
transformation, the hotel became a landmark known locally and
internationally for its hospitality and its history.
Since the establishment of the Hotel Sinai by Mrs. Sylvia
Aponte, its original, centralized and continuous corner
location on Calle
Sanchez and Calle Narciso Miraya in the city of Nagua, has
gained the nickname of “Silvia Aponte’s Corner”.
In
1962 the hotel’s name was changed to Hotel Sinai with the
addition of a new building, increasing the space to
217 square meters and the number of rooms from 8 to 18. Up
until 1996, Mrs. Silvia Aponte was the main figure of the
Hotel Sinai, being recognized by the town for her talents and
skills as an administrator, a poet and an author. In addition,
Mrs. Aponte was also a tireless advocate for the community
through various charitable and sports organizations. Some of
her many roles include President of the Civil Defense
Department, Honorary Colonel of the fire Brigade and President
of the Office of Tourism among so many other altruistic
projects that she developed and carried out.
In
1996 the administration of the Hotel Sinai was
transferred to the second generation of the Aponte family,
Mrs. Aponte’s daughter, Divina Arias Aponte and her husband
Donald Jaime. The facilities were once again renovated thus
expanding the hotel to a three-story 50 rooms
building, with a large parking area.
Part of the history and legacy of the Hotel Sinai includes the
artistic, civil and political personalities that have visited
our facilities. Our family hotel has played host to a variety
of individuals such as the family of the dictator Trujillo in
the years of his government, former Dominican presidents
Antonio Guzmán, Jacobo Majluta, Salvador Jorge Blanco and Fabio
Herrera Cabral among
others.
In
2002, the Hotel Sinai celebrated its 60th
anniversary. On this occasion the Hotel received recognitions
from The Bank of Reserve, the Municipal City Council of Nagua,
the Interior Secretary of State for Tourism, the Rotary Club,
the Retailers Union and the Association of Hotels, among other
tourist and economic institutions that recognize the economic
contribution the hotel has made to the tourist sector of the
community of Nagua.
The
Hotel Sinai is known for its informal and family friendly
style making it “You Home Away from Home”.
